You can hear voices in multiple languages excitedly anticipating his approach, breaking out in chants (“this is the youth of the Pope!”), and cheering when he gets close. The people we met around us were from Singapore, Saudi Arabia, the U.S., and the Philippines, and together we celebrated both Pope Leo’s presence and the shared moment of having witnessed it together.

What struck me most was the contrast. I thought the opening procession, where we first saw Pope Leo, would elicit cheers and waving. But instead the square had a quiet, reverent stillness (as it should). After Mass, however, was a different story. It was as if we all collectively exhaled and enjoyed a shared revelry.
