🔊 A Moment of Stillness in Sapporo’s Botanic Garden

Walking path covered with yellow autumn leaves surrounded by tall dark tree trunks in the Hokkaido University Botanic Garden.

A quiet pause in the preserved forest of the Ishikari Plain

In the heart of Sapporo, the Hokkaido University Botanic Garden feels like a small zone of calm tucked away from the city.

In this space in the forest that once covered the Ishikari Plain, wind moves through the trees, a few birds calls from somewhere we didn’t see, and groundskeepers go about their business caring for the flora.

This soundscape captures a quiet moment inside Japan’s second-oldest botanical garden—a place created for research and preservation, but cherished simply as somewhere to breathe and wander.

Make a sound map

A botanic garden seems like its going to be a quiet place, but once you start listening, you’ll hear lots of different sounds. Take a map (if available) or draw a rough shape of the property, then note what sounds you hear in different locations.

Follow the quiet

As you walk through the space, let your ears do the navigating. Listen for the silence and head towards it. What do you learn about where you’ve been? Or where you end up?

Feel the textures

As permitted, feel the textures of the tree trunks. How is the bark different? Could you identify the tree (or remember it) based solely on the texture of its bark?
